Tinea - What causes it?

Tinea infection is increased by poor hygiene, enclosed footwear, prolonged moist skin, and minor skin or nail injuries.

The condition is contagious and can be spread by

  • Direct contact.
  • In bathrooms, changing rooms and swimming pool surfaces.
  • Contact with items such as shoes.
  • Walking bare foot on a public floor.
  • Sharing a towel.




Tinea Self Help Treatment

Tinea pedis can quickly spread to any area of the skin and nails so it is important that the treatment is effective to prevent spread and reinfection.
  • Wash and carefully dry your feet every day.
  • Use a separate towel to avoid passing on the infection and do not share the towel with anyone else.
  • Use an antifungal powder between your toes.
  • Wear socks made of cotton or wool, and change them at least twice a day.
  • Wear sandals or leather shoes.
  • Use thongs in public showers such as at swimming pools.
